Whaaaaattt?? Girlfags??!!? I have another name for them ? SELF-MASOCHISTS.? I mean, who in the hell would want to run a race when you?re never given a shot at the prize?? Like that lady from the band, Garbage says, ?Stupid girls.?

But, where ? oh where ? is the totally straight, totally smart, slightly dumpy male counterpart for the lesbiana woman?? Where is he?? Wikipedia thinks he exists.? But, there has been progress on the lesbian side.? They?ve even come out with these hot clothing lines for the butch ? set.? I have a very good, quasi-famous, lady-gentleman friend (butch) and she dresses like this ? sort of like a James Dean, but with lady parts.? It?s awesome.

No one wants the advertising dollars of what I call myself and Wifesy ? THE OINKS.? You know, one-income-no-kids.? No one wants to cater to the OINKS.? There is no OINK-targeted cool vodka.? Oh, how I wish there was.

Regardless, with change and time and added liberties comes a much needed equality.? The lesbianas are dressing better.? Like all women out there, we?re fighting for more dollars.? And we?ve decided if they can?t sustain more than one night at a goddermed lesbian bar than feck it, we?re going to the cool-looking venue for the gay boys.? So, it?s time?

Again, I don?t even understand what that means.? Why doesn?t it work?? Well, the term fag HAG ? too negative.? She hangs around fags and she?s a hag.? Sorry, but part of that term is saying ? she?s an ugly witch and no straight dude would ever want her.? Nope, I don?t think that?s totally true.? It?s a snap judgement and therefore, probably more indicative of the bitchy queen that made it up more than anything else.? I?m the owner of my own life-time-vag, so I think it?s only fair that I get to make up the term.? Plus, a person who hangs out with another person AND either a) doesn?t want to make sexies with them or b) has too many insecurities to find a similar person of the opposite sex ? well, they have enough problems without also calling them ugly to boot.

So, I?ve come up with a new term.? I would like to now present, a new name for the Male ?fag hag? ? a male who prefers the company of lesbians, introducing?

Some of us can handle that (I pretty much can), some of us can not (it annoys the hell out of Wifesy).

U.N. ceasefire mission fails to curb Syria violence

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian opposition activists accused forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad of bombarding rebel areas on Wednesday as a U.N. mission was expected to arrive in Damascus in a first step to implement an international peace plan.

Activists said at least 80 people have been killed since Tuesday despite the imminent arrival of the advance team from the U.N. peacekeeping department.

The advance mission is part of the latest international effort to end a year of bloodshed that began with peaceful protests against Assad's authoritarian rule in March 2011.

Activists said troops and police loyal to Assad pressed on with a campaign of raids and arrests in rebel areas, accompanied by bombardments, gun battles and sniper attacks.

"Since this morning they have been shelling Khalidiya neighborhood, that is in its 17th day," said Hadi Abdullah by telephone from Homs, the city of one million which has suffered most in the bloody 12 month uprising.

"Whatever it is that hits the area leaves a horrible sulfur smell, like rotten eggs."

Human rights group Amnesty International said it had counted 232 deaths since Syria accepted Annan's plan on March 27.

Assad's government issued its latest official death toll for the 12-month uprising. It told the United Nations that 6,044 people had been killed of whom 2,566 were soldiers and police.

The United Nations itself says Assad's forces have killed more than 9,000 people in the past year.

The mission, headed by Norwegian General Robert Mood, is part of efforts to implement a deal between Assad and international mediator Kofi Annan for an April 10 withdrawal of Syrian forces, to be followed by a ceasefire by rebel forces within 48 hours.

During the visit, it is expected to discuss deploying some 250 U.N. monitors to oversee a ceasefire. But his acceptance of a troop withdrawal has met skepticism among the Syrian opposition and its Western and Arab supporters.

"The Syrian authorities have said they will do that by April 10," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in London.

"There is no sign of them doing it so far. Attacks on the citizens, the civilians of their country have continued, the murder, oppression, and torture of the regime has continued..."

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said on Tuesday the Security Council would have to respond if Assad used the next seven days to intensify the violence.

Syria's ally Russia however attacked the "Friends of Syria" group of Western and Arab nations who met in Istanbul at the weekend, saying it was undermining Annan's peace mission.

"Everyone has supported Kofi Annan's plan, but decisions at the 'Friends of Syria' group meeting aimed at arming the opposition and at new sanctions undermine peace efforts," state-run Itar-Tass quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying.

Despite its pro-Assad tone, some diplomats have said Moscow has grown increasingly frustrated with Damascus and its failure to end the uprising.

"Russia believes regime change in Syria would result in an Islamist regime after a great deal of bloodshed," one senior diplomat told Reuters.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem is due in Moscow for talks on April 10, Russia's Foreign ministry said.

DAY OF VIOLENCE

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitor which collates reports from inside Syria, said 58 civilians and 18 soldiers were killed on Tuesday.

It said 20 civilians died in Homs province, including 15 killed in bombardment, shooting and sniper fire in Homs city.

In Idlib province, 20 civilians and seven soldiers were killed in clashes in Taftanaz village, east of Idlib city. Rami Abdulrahman, head of the SOHR, said rebel fighters had hit at least two of the tanks bombarding the village.

In Homs province on Wednesday, seven people were killed during clashes, the Observatory reported.

The Syrian state news agency SANA said "several terrorists" and three security men were killed in Taftanaz. "Armed terrorist groups ... were attacking citizens, and perpetrating acts of killing, kidnapping and planting explosives," it said.

"At a poultry farm in a Dir Baalba orchard (Homs province), the terrorists killed a number of citizens in cold blood, mutilating and burning their bodies after kidnapping them. The terrorists also killed four women at one house in the same neighborhood after storming it," SANA said.

Accounts of the violence could not be verified because Syria's government restricts access to independent journalists.

Some analysts predict that huge numbers of Syrians would fill the streets to demand Assad's resignation if the threat of armed repression were lifted. "Millions will start demonstrating and Assad can't afford to see this," said Randa Slim, from the Middle East Institute in Washington.

A video said to have been filmed in Damascus on Tuesday night showed a line of fire, probably from burning tires, cutting off six lanes of traffic on a downtown expressway.

In the Barzeh district of central Damascus, a device exploded in a car belonging to a man close to the authorities and in Beit Saham outside the capital three people were killed and more than 15 wounded by an explosion, activist reports said.

Study Suggests Vaccine May Help Kids With Brain Cancer - Health ...

TUESDAY, April 3 (HealthDay News) ? A vaccination may help boost the immune system of children with brain tumors, a small new study reports.

The prognosis for many children with brain tumors, known as gliomas, is grim. Radiation is the only effective treatment, although there has been hope that a vaccine could boost the immune system?s response.

The results of the new study, which included 27 children and was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, were released Monday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Chicago.

?We?ve found that the vaccine is tolerated well with limited systemic toxicity, but we?ve also observed that there are some patients who have immunological responses to the vaccine target in the brain that can cause swelling and transient worsening, and subsequently, some of those children can have very favorable responses,? study lead author Dr. Ian Pollack said in an AACR news release.

?We?ve also demonstrated immunological responses in the majority of the kids,? added Pollack, who is vice chairman for academic affairs in the department of neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The study patients included 16 children with newly diagnosed brain stem gliomas, five with newly diagnosed cerebral high-grade gliomas and six with recurrent gliomas.

?These kids, who, for the most part, have intact and very robust immune systems, seem to mount an immune response against the vaccine very effectively at rates that may be even higher than have been noted in studies in adults,? Pollack said in the news release.

?This was the first study of its type that examined peptide vaccine therapy for children with brain tumors like this,? added Pollack, who is also the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh and co-director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Brain Tumor Program.

Some of the children experienced what is called ?pseudoprogression? after receiving the vaccine, which means that the tumor temporarily grew and the disease symptoms worsened, but the tumor later got smaller and the disease stabilized, the study authors explained in the news release.

?The fact that we?ve seen tumor shrinkage in children with very high-risk tumors has been extremely encouraging and somewhat surprising,? Pollack noted.

Commenting on the study findings, Dr. John Yu, director of surgical neuro-oncology and vice chair of the department of neurosurgery at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said that the impact on the immune systems of the patients is impressive.

?The safe and potentially effective nature of this vaccine would give thousands of patients new hope,? Yu said. ?Although one cannot glean whether this will improve their overall survival while maintaining a good quality of life, it provides some hope that harnessing the power of the immune system to fight off the brainstem glioma may kill tumor cells and provide a novel means of fighting off their disease.?

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Human ancestors used fire earlier than thought, study says

Flame-bearing Prometheus may have visited humans earlier than we thought. An analysis of charred bones and plant ash in sediment from a South African cave suggests that Homo erectus was wielding fire a million years ago ? and perhaps even cooking with it, according to a study released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The findings present the earliest clear evidence of such use of fire, experts said.

The ability to control fire marks an evolutionary turning point: It would have kept our ancient relatives warm in unforgiving climes and allowed them to cook their food, releasing trapped nutrients and getting more caloric bang per bite.

"Fire is more than simply a pleasant luxury ? we have pretty good evidence that it was the basis for a tremendous number of changes in human evolution," said Richard Wrangham, an evolutionary anthropologist at Harvard University who was not involved in the study.

The ability to cook food, Wrangham says, would have allowed early humans to spend less time looking for food and given them more expendable energy. It could help explain, among other body changes, why human teeth became smaller ? less need to spend time chewing. It could have reduced the time between births, allowing for population growth, and perhaps allowed for the development of a larger brain.

But it's unclear who lighted the first man-made flame. Convincing evidence for the habitual use of fire goes back nearly 400,000 years, coinciding with both archaic Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. Some scientists believed that fire must have been in use much further back in time, while others remained doubtful.

To look for earlier evidence of burning, an international team led by archaeological scientist Francesco Berna of Boston University studied the sediments in Wonderwerk Cave in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Among the bits of rock, team members found plant ash, probably from burned twigs and grasses used to fuel the flames, as well as charred bone fragments.

But it's difficult to tell ? with the naked eye, at least ? whether a grayish bone turned that ashy color because it was cooked or because it was mineralized. So the researchers put the bone fragments under a microscope and shone infrared light on them, to get more information about the bone's mineral structure.

Bones are filled with a mineral called hydroxylapatite, which gives them their strength. It forms in tiny plate-like crystals that slowly fuse together as an old bone is fossilized. When a bone is heated to high temperatures, however, the crystals change shape, growing into large needles rather than small plates.

The researchers found that the bone fragments indeed contained the large-needled crystals rather than the more conventional plate-like patterns. Based on their analysis, the bones had to have been heated to more than 750 degrees Fahrenheit.

The results caught Berna by surprise. "I needed some time to convince myself ? and then I needed some time to convince my colleagues," he said.

The fact that the burned bones were discovered about 100 feet deep inside the cave was further indication that the charred matter was probably not the result of a wildfire, but had been intentionally burned by humans within the cave, perhaps for heat and for cooking.

Though the scientists can't say who exactly lighted those fires, the most likely suspect would be Homo erectus, thought to be the longest-surviving of the early human relatives. There are even burned bits from the cave that indicate fire use goes back 1.7 million years, Berna said ? although it's far too early to say that for sure, he added.

There are a few caveats, however. A burned bone isn't automatic evidence of cooked meat ? those cave-dwellers could have eaten the flesh raw and then tossed the bones in the fire, Wrangham said.

And, Berna admits, the research team found no actual stone-encircled hearths in the cave, which would have been the archaeological equivalent to a smoking gun.

But the evidence is mounting that hominin species used fire well before the era of modern humans, researchers said. And this may fundamentally alter our perception of our ancestors' intellectual capability, physiology and evolutionary success ? and how that relates to our own.

"If you can say, 'Sorry, Homo sapiens, you didn't invent fire,' it kind of changes how we view our place and what defines us," said Chris Organ, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Utah who was not involved in the study.
